A vibrant, thriving community…
An extension of the John H. Boner Community Center, the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center, is the tool used to accomplish the vision. By developing profound community partnerships that create a robust menu of services for children, youth, families, seniors and neighborhood residents, the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center serves as a major hub for comprehensive, holistic programming for all who live in this community.
A community-driven approach…
The Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center grew out of a community-driven quality of life work plan begun in 2007. This process engaged more than 500 residents in defining seven quality of life indicators, each of which consists of multiple action items with performance measures attached. This work plan, and its promise of revitalization for an entire neighborhood, was attached to the city of Indianapolis’ bid for the 2012 Super Bowl and helped secure it.
When Indianapolis was awarded the 2012 Super Bowl, the National Football League donated a $1 million capital gift towards the establishment of a Youth Education Town (the 14th in the nation). Each YET is provided with national programming models based upon research-based practices and are provided with technical assistance; however, each is unique in its operations, partners and programming based upon the distinctive nature and vision of each sponsoring organization.
In true grassroots style, the community capitalized upon this opportunity and raised an additional $10 million to build upon the YET and create the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center, tapping into the possibility of widespread community change.
he Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center is ready to open on February 7, 2012 following the momentum of Super Bowl XLVI. Our facility features a full-service fitness facility, state-of-the-art media studio, mobile computer lab, educational greenhouse and garden, instructional kitchen and art studio. With an equal emphasis on education and fitness, the three overarching goals of the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center are:
- Provide comprehensive programming to the Near Eastside community that will improve the quality of life for residents of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances;
- Provide targeted educational programs that will enable IPS students to achieve academic success; and
- Enable the Arsenal Tech campus to become the most robust and comprehensive “community school” in Indiana.
